When traveling with children on an airplane, being prepared is the best way to overcome the stress and frustration that can accompany air travel. While most kids behave when on long flights, if your child is prone to tantrums, you may want to consider another mode of travel. Keeping your children in their seats and as quiet as possible when on a flight is your responsibility.

In order to get the best deals possible on a flight, it is always best to book them a few months in advance. This way, you will be able to book the correct number of seats that are close to each other. Many airlines allow you to choose your seats when booking in advance, so choose seats that are next to each other so you can monitor your children. If you will be flying with a baby, ask for a child seat. These seats are similar to car seats are much safer when traveling.

Explaining to children in advance of the rules when flying will help reduce issues once you are aboard. If possible, choose an airline that serves child portions and meals that are appropriate. If your child is a picky with their food, you may want to bring snacks with you and have a larger meal once you have landed. This is recommended on international flights as the food served may not be for children. Sometimes ordering one meal and sharing it is a good way to get your children to eat.

The biggest obstacle when brining children on a plane is keeping them occupied for the flight. Bring books, small toys, and stuffed animals to help keep your child entertained. Because they may get bored quickly, have a few extra toys packed. Most children will behave on a five or six hour plane trip when they have enough to do.

Saving time at the airport by printing off boarding passes and other documents before your flight will be easier than standing in line with your children. Use the self-service kiosks if you cannot print boarding passes from home. When waiting in an airport, do not let your children run around. This will only encourage them to do the same on the plane. Because they will be excited about their trip, you should try to remain patient, but let them know they will not be allowed to run around on the plane or shout.

Traveling with children can be worrisome for many parents, but for those who have taught their children to have good manners and listen to what they are being told, many children behave very well when traveling.
